Dining, Ponzi stories top March list

Good afternoon everyone,

Delaware Business Now had another record month for web traffic in March. Monthly page views and unique visitors have risen 25 percent since December.

The story seeing the most activity was the announcement of Rehoboth-based SoDel Concepts announcing plans to open Thompson Island Brewing Co. at a location near its popular Bluecoast restaurant on Coastal Highway.

New dining spots and closings are a mainstay in terms of page views and engagement.

Contributing greatly to the activity was SoDel’s decision to share the post with its large social media following. In the geo-located world of Google, our work does not always make its way to Southern Delaware.

Finishing second was the story of a real estate broker pleading guilty to operating a $3.3 million Ponzi scheme involving “guaranteed” returns on real estate investments.

The practice of seeking investors for home purchases and flips is legal, but shaky to say the least. Be especially wary, if double-digit returns are touted.

Generally, experienced flippers who do some or most of the work, assume the risk,   pocket the proceeds and move on to the next property. They know the next project is a foundation or plumbing project away from being a money pit.

Ranking third was student pushback from Newark’s decision to regulate large parties. The ordinance was written to include gatherings of as few as four people. It could mean the  “get off my lawn types” may be making regular calls to authorities.
