The Delaware Department of Transportation has released a video outlining plans for the overhaul of a six-mile section of Interstate 95 that passes through Wilmington.

Sometimes known as the I-95 viaduct project, work is slated to get underway in two years and will cause major traffic disruptions.

The project will lead to the closing of key exists on I-95,  a situation that will require drivers to seek alternatives routes.

The viaduct refers to a large elevated portion of the interstate that is showing its age and is supported by piers that can fall victim to time,  weather and other factors.

A portion of nearby I-495 was closed for months, due to emergency repairs to piers. The problems were linked to materials stored nearby that caused the ground to shift.

DelDOT has held two informational meetings regarding the project.

Through traffic is not expected to be heavily affected as long as major projects are not needed on I-495, which goes around the city. However,  political and business pressures have led to the route keeping the I-95 designation and lead some travelers to use the route.

I-95 remains the access point to busy Route 202-Concord Pike, the site of major construction when AstraZeneca expanded nearby a decade or more ago. The company has since reduced its presence. However, JPMorgan Chase and other employers are filling that gap.

By the time the I-95 project gets underway, technology in the form of sign boards, navigation systems and mapping apps should reduce through traffic.
