The Newark City Council will consider a plan for a hotel-office building on Main Street at a meeting on Monday night.

The seven-story building has drawn fire from residents, with the city Planning Commission deadlocked over the proposal from Lang Development.

Residents remain upset over Lang not holding a. public meeting regarding the proposal that would preserve one building on Main Street and demolish another in constructing a seven-story structure.

Other objections include the height of the structure and whether it is out of character with Main Street.

The project has received some support from downtown businesses.

Parking in downtown would be affected, due to the loss of parking space leased to the city

Lang representatives say that depending on the occupancy level of the hotel, spaces would be available to the public.

The city has not moved forward with a parking structure or other solutions, despite much discussion over the years.

The Monday meeting will also include a request by Fusco Management, owner of the College Square Shopping Center to raze a largely vacant portion of the sprawling area, build new retail space and add more than 300 apartments. The apartments will not be configured for student housing.

The northern part of the shopping center  which includes the Acme store and other businesses is being updated. Residents have expressed concerns that the apartments would turn into student rentals.

The topics of student rentals and parking will be discussed by the council at special meetings this week.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m.  Click here for the agenda.
