A home security alarm comparison site reported that Newark ranked lowest among Delaware cities in its overall crime rate.

Wilmington led  Delaware in the rate of violent crimes after a difficult year in 2017, according to  Alarms.org.

However, in one surprising finding, Milford on the border between Sussex and Kent counties,   came in with the highest property crime rate and ended up at the bottom of the list. Property crimes include burglaries and car thefts.

Ranked as the second safest city was Smyrna, followed by Middletown, Dover, Wilmington and Milford.

Alarm.com based the findings on 2017  FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics.

The national report ranked cities with a population of 10,000 or more that submitted full reports to the FBI. That limited the number of municipalities in Delaware to six

Other factors were used including   Police Adequacy (TotalCrimes/number of police employees). That factor may have influenced Milford’s ranking.

“We consider that the smaller the police adequacy statistic is, the safer the city is,” the report stated.
