Longtime Newark City Councilman Jerry Clifton appears to have  thrown his hat into the ring in the race for Newark Mayor.

A Facebook post from state Rep. Paul Baumbach showed Clifton at the Municipal Building signing paperwork.

Clifton entered the race after Mayor Polly Sierer decided not to seek a third term, shortly before the early February deadline for candidate filings.

Clifton, who is retired from the National Guard,  enters the race with name recognition, with some in the college town’s business and educational establishment breathing a sigh of relief.

Political unknowns, Catherine Ciferni and University of Delaware Kasai Guthrie, have filed for the position, according to the Newark Post.

Newark is facing town and gown tensions that are normal in university communities. The expansion of student housing into the city continues to be an issue.
