Not everyone is happy with the Gulftainer lease that turned over the Port of Wimlington to the Emirates-based company.
In his response to Governor John Carney’s State of the State message, GOP Chairman Chuck Boyce said Gov. John Carney praised the agreement led to the lease of the Port of Wilmington.
Boyce said that “cutting deals with large, foreign corporations misses the mark on how best to tackle Delaware’s struggling economy. We have one of the slowest economic recoveries in the country, and that in large part is due to chasing the dangling carrot of large corporations like Amazon’s HQ2 If we really want to see lower crime rates in places like Wilmington and Dover, we need to foster an entrepreneurial spirit that instills a sense of pride in small business owners in our state.”
The lease deal was overwhelmingly approved by members of both parties in the General Assembly.
The lease helps the state, since the port has been running at a loss, with the state spending money for new cranes and equipment o keep the site competitive.
Gulftainer also agreed to work on an expansion of the port to the former Chemours-DuPont titanium plant site on the Delaware River.
Legislators were not swayed by claims from convservative groups that the sale posed security risks.
The Trump Administration did not act on a request to study the state deal with the private company based in the Middle East.
Boyce also criticized Carney’s efforts at gun control legislation. He praised the governor’s education efforts.
