Giant to spend $175 million on store expansion, remodeling

Giant Food announced a $175 million capital over the next two years.

The significant investment will include one new store and 24 store remodels.

The investment will include stores in Delaware, although no specifics were offered. Giant has stores in north Wilmington, Bear, Middletown and Lewes-Rehoboth.

“As the region’s leading grocer, this announcement is part of our long-term commitment to deliver a consistently exceptional experience for our shoppers,” said Gordon Reid, President, Giant Food. “We look forward to updating and enhancing our existing stores and constructing both new and replacement locations to give our shoppers a fresh and imaginative selection, unique in-store experiences and superior customer service.”

The 24 store locations will feature new amenities such as enhanced perishable, produce, full-service florists, expanded natural and organic departments, hot Asian food bars, fresh squeezed juice bars, enhanced check-out zones. and  full-service pharmacies

Thanks to the new projects, Giant anticipates the creation of approximately 500 new jobs in the communities it serves through the hiring of full and part-time associates.

Giant is part of a company that owns Food Lion and Pennsylvania-based Giant, Carlisle. Delaware stores operated under the Super G name for several years to reduce any confusion with the Pennsylvania operation.
