Delaware joined a number of Sun Belt states in ranking low as a safe place for senior citizens.

The First State ranked highest in the percentage of seniors living alone, has hefty housing costs and high rates of financial fraud.

Delaware finished a dismal 49thamong 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a survey from  The Senior List,  an online directory of services for older Americans.

Physical safety only accounted for a portion of the ranking that included the following factors.

  • Fraud: 47th (758 per 100,000 people)
  • Monthly Housing Cost: 38th ($1,076)
  • Percentage Living in Poverty: 23rd (8.5%)
  • Violent Injury Death Rate: 16th(14.6 per 100,000 people)
  • Living Alone: 51st (5.43%)

States in colder climates, despite the challenges of winter,   finished higher with Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota taking the top spots.

Joining Delaware at the bottom were Florida, Arizona and New Mexico.
