Bayhealth is moving forward with its expansion into northern  Sussex County. The health care system entered into an agreement to purchase 18 acres of land along Route 9 at the intersection of Hudson Road near Harbeson.

The  Cape Gazette  reported Bayhealth will build a large medical building on the site. See link below. The project would require rezoning in the rapidly growing area. (See link to story below).

The Harbeson area is seeing rapid growth.

“We are excited to expand our footprint in southern Delaware,”  Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy when the announcement of the land purchase was announced.

Bayhealth is nearly competition of  a new $314 million hospital and outpatient center just off Route 1 in Milford in northern Sussex County.

The complex is scheduled to open to the public in February.

“As more services are available on an outpatient basis, we hope that one day this property will allow Bayhealth to expand access to care, improve convenience and add choices for the rapidly growing population of consumers seeking high-quality health care services in Sussex County.”

Bayhealth is currently building a new $314 million hospital and outpatient center just off Route 1 in Milford near the Sussex-Kent county line.

The new campus  is scheduled to open to the public in February 2019. Visit BayhealthSussex.org  to learn more about campus.

Beebe Healthcare   is also undertaking an expansion effort to serve a growing and aging population in Coastal Sussex County. Both Kent and Sussex counties have seen an influx of retirees, drawn to the area by low tax and beach areas.

A planned addition of hospital beds by Beebe was scrubbed, due to the increased use of outpatient facilities.

Bayhealth is the state’s second-largest hospital system, trailing Christiana Care. It also operates the former Kent General Hospital in Dover, now known as the Kent Campus.

Also  players in the Sussex County are  Nanticoke  Health  in  western Sussex and Peninsula in Salisbury.

The purchase puts Bayhealth   in the market area of Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. In the past, nonprofit hospital systems had often  refrained from going too far into the territories of neighboring systems.

That began to change as Bayhealth pushed north into Middletown, and Elkton, MD-based Union Hospital  did the same.

Christiana Care later built offices and emergency center in the fast-growing area on a large tract that would allow for the construction of a hospital.
