Airbnb says Delaware hosts earned $13.5 million in income

Airbnb announced today that its Delaware host community earned a total of approximately $13.5 million in supplemental income while adding  about  74,400 guest arrivals to the state in 2018.

The bulk of the revenues came in Sussex County.

Airbnb  now 1,100 Delaware hosts who share their homes via Airbnb, typically earning about $10,300 annually in supplemental income.

“2018 was another great year for Airbnb in Delaware, with more local residents and small businesses able to benefit from the economic opportunities created by home sharing than ever before,” said Liz DeBold Fusco, spokesperson for Airbnb. “As we reflect on this past year and celebrate the beginning of a new one, we are proud to have played a small role in countless memories and cultural exchanges statewide — from college commencements to summer trips to the holiday season. We look forward to continuing to help families across Delaware earn extra income while allowing countless communities to enjoy the tourism economy in 2019.”

Airbnb’s accommodation marketplace provides access to five   million  places to stay in more than 81,000 cities and 191 countries. 

The app has been under fire in many areas, with the lodging industry in Delaware and elsewhere alleging that some Airbnb operators operate a sizable number of properties that serve as unregulated hotels that evade lodging taxes. 

Airbnb and related services have also challenged seasonal rental real estate agents that have responded with apps of their own. 

In some major cities, Airbnb owners have snatched up apartments, driving up  rents in areas that already have a high cost of living.
