Maryland’s congressional delegation was successful in efforts to obtain $20 million in funding for Interstate 95 interchange that will improve access to a growing distribution center in the Perryville area.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $20 million grant to Cecil County. The Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant provides funding for a new interchange at I-95 and Belvidere Road, and for the relocation of Belvidere Road and construction of a new bridge over I-95.
Thanks to a central location and government assistance, the area has attracted Amazon and other distribution sites.
Delaware, which is closer to some of these markets, had limited land available and for years a reputation as a difficult spot for development. Redevelopment work at the G.M. Boxwood Plant and other sites should open up more opportunities for logistics-based companies.
U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Cecil County and the Eastern Shore made the following statement:
“This BUILD grant in Cecil County is important to the ongoing economic development in the Principio Enterprise Zone and will positively impact Cecil County as well as the First District. The construction of the I-95 interchange will continue to attract and retain innovative and thriving local employers. Because of the strategic location of Cecil County within the Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and New York City corridor, the I-95/Belvidere interchange will further stimulate economic growth in this area, with new and existing businesses estimated to create 7,500 jobs. The decision to award Cecil County with this grant shows the tremendous leadership of President Trump and Secretary Chao and their ongoing commitment to improving our infrastructure and our economy.”
