Lidl expands with purchase of New York area grocery chain

German discount  grocer  Lidl will buy a family-owned chain in the York City metro area in its first U.S. acquisition.

The   German company will acquire 27 Best locations in New York and New Jersey for an undisclosed sum. Best employees will retain their positions with the company which will convert the stores to the Lidl name.

The deal marks a new chapter in the company’s plans to build a foothold in the U.S. long after archrival Aldi arrived in the U.S.

Lidl established a beachhead in the U.S. with a distribution center in Perryville, MD, west of the Delaware line and opening new stores in Middletown and other areas of the Mid Atlantic.

However, the company trimmed back on expansion plans that included a location in the  Brookside area south of Newark and Elkton.  The company is moving forward on a location in Dover. It has instead moved to a  less risky strategy of opening smaller stores and leasing locations.

Lidl operates about 10,500 stores in 29 countries Lidl first established its U.S. headquarters in Arlington County, VA in June 2015. The company has more than 50 stores in the U.S.

In addition to its distribution center in Perryville, the company has other distribution sites in Virginia and North Carolina and announced plans for a center in Georgia.
