Year Up gets $200,000 grant from Bank of America

Year Up Wilmington strives to eliminate the opportunity divide by providing young adults with the skills, experience, and support they need to reach their potential in both their higher education and professional careers.

This year marks 15 years for Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders‒ the company’s signature philanthropic program. Neighborhood Builders. The program advances issues of economic mobility through advancing nonprofit leadership to solve tough community challenges.

Each Neighborhood Builders recipient receives a two-year, $200,000 grant, and a year of leadership training for the Executive Director and an Emerging Leader, an opportunity to access capital, and access to a network of peer organizations across the U.S.

Through a partnership with Wilmington University, Year Up provides a one-year program for college students that help equip them with the necessary skillset to develop meaningful careers.

Thanksgiving for Thousands returns

 For the past 24 years, Mountaire Farms has spearheaded an effort to feed thousands of needy families across Delmarva and in North Carolina during the holidays with their Thanksgiving for Thousands event.

Last Saturday,  16  area grocery stores collected non-perishable food items as the community comes together to help.  Twelve different volunteer groups including local VFW’s and American Legions, Lions Clubs, various church groups handed out lists of what is needed and to collect donated items. 

On  Monday, hundreds of volunteers gathered at the  Mountaire Farms warehouse in Selbyville to pack 8,500 boxes with a complete Thanksgiving dinner for a family, including a  Mountaire Farms chicken roaster. Boxes also include corn, string beans, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and a brownie mix for dessert.

“This event grows every year and we are so proud of our team for leading this huge community effort,” said Phil Plylar, president of Mountaire Farms. “Our company has always been involved in feeding people, but it’s especially meaningful for everyone to come together to help out during the holiday season.”

Various community organizations help distribute the food boxes to those families in need.

JPMorgan Chase employees pack 12,000 care packages for USO.

More than 750 JPMorgan Chase employees in partnership with the USO packed 12,000 care packages for active overseas military service members in just 3 hours.

The packages were filled with a variety of the most requested items including snacks, hand wipes, gum, as well as personalized handwritten notes from our employee volunteers.

The packages will be distributed by the USO in the coming weeks and shipped to units deployed to Southwest Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific. The USO’s mission is to strengthen America’s military members by keeping them connected to home. 

Nickle Electrical, employs donate to veterans group

Nickle Electrical Companies, Newark and its employees donated $5,240 to the Friends of Delaware Veterans, Inc. to support the organization’s trust fund, which provides financial assistance to veterans for health care needs, housing support, educational and training programs, and other financial emergencies such as utility cutoffs and lack of food.

“I’m very proud of our employees for coming together and supporting such a great cause,” said Steve Dignan, Nickle Electrical CEO. “This is Nickle’s third consecutive year raising money for the veterans in our community and we hope to continue for many years to come.”

Nickle matched, dollar for dollar, what each employee contributed. Since beginning the campaign three years ago, the company and its employees have donated a total of $13,870. The Friends of Delaware Veterans returns 100 percent of their proceeds to prescreened, honorably discharged Delaware veterans and their families in verified financial emergencies.

$16,500 raised to fight MS

Residents of Noble’s Pond (www.noblespondhomes.coma  55+ Active Adult Community near Dover,  recently came together for the seventh year to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis.

Girls’ Night Out to Fight MS brought together Noble’s Pond residents, members of the Dover community and friends for   “Pocketbook Bingo” competition, with entry fees and additional monies raised donated to fight MS.  The event raised more than  $16,500.

The event is the brainchild of Noble’s Pond Lifestyle Director Colleen Ostafy, whose adult daughter is successfully living with MS. 

Giant grocery stores donate 1,000 turkeys

  Giant Food donated 1,000 turkeys to the Food Bank for the holiday season.

The donation was part of Giant’s contributions to five area Feeding America food banks for a total of 6,000 turkeys to help alleviate hunger across the Mid-Atlantic region.

 The Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, and Blue Ridge Area Food Bank also each received at least 1,000 turkeys. This annual donation is part of Giant’s overall commitment to supporting local food banks and pantries.

SoDel donates $4,000 to Big Brothers, Big Sisters

SoDel Cares,  a charitable foundation founded by SoDel Concepts, Rehoboth Beach,  recently donated $4,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware.

Since 1964, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware has provided one-on-one mentoring to children facing adversity. The nonprofit matches caring adults with at-risk youth, many of whom are from single-parent households. Each relationship is administered and supported by rigorous standards and trained personnel.

Comcast/NBCUniversal steps up hiring of veterans

Comcast NBCUniversal announced it will hire an additional 11,000 veterans, military spouses, and National Guard and Reserve members, bringing its total to 21,000 military hires by the end of 2021. Comcast’s previous commitment, made in 2015, was to hire 10,000 military community members by the end of 2017, which it exceeded.

Comcast NBCUniversal has an expansive program to support veterans who have recently transitioned into the workforce, including peer-to-peer mentorship with other veteran employees, digital and in-person professional development opportunities designed specifically for veteran and military spouse employees, and opportunities to stay engaged with the military through volunteering with local veteran-serving organizations.

The company also has an 8,400 member strong VetNet employee resource group dedicated to supporting  its military workforce.

In August, the company announced that its Internet Essentials program expanded eligibility to low-income veterans, nearly one million of whom live within the Comcast’s service area. 

As reported last week, Delaware Comcast employee and Navy Veteran David Pinder led an effort to replace old flags in the area. The old flags were retired in a ceremony.
