Peri-Peri chicken will return to PIke Creek.

Peri Peri Grill closed the doors of its Pike Creek location west of Wilmington. A sign on the door said the business was closed for renovations.  Comments on its Facebook page asked if the closing was permanent. The site responded with a sad emoji.

The restaurant later confirmed it will reopen next week with a new name and new menu that will include Peri-Peri.

The restaurant opened in 2015 and offered the spicy barbecue  chicken that has its roots in an area of Africa that was colonized by the Portuguese. Sauces are also offered. The chicken is named after a pepper that grows in Africa

The restaurant announced in late May that its franchisor Piree’s had departed the U.S. market. The restaurant was renamed Peri Peri Grill and a temporary banner was taped over the Piree’s sign.

Peri-Peri competes with Jamaican jerk chicken, Peruvian rotisserie chicken, filipino barbecue recipe  and increasingly popular Korean fried chicken.
