Mayor and publishing executive Angelo Martinelli, 91


A Long-time Yonkers, NY mayor and publishing executive whose holdings included Delaware Today has died.

Angelo Martinelli, 91, was the longest serving mayor in the history of the city, the Daily Voicereported.

He was credited with the revival of the downtown and in spurring economic development in the outer suburb of New York City.

Martinelli served two separate stints as Yonkers Mayor. In the first, the city became involved in a controversy over desegregating housing, with Martinelli seekinga negotiated settlement. He was defeated in an election bid but later returned to serve as mayor.

An HBO serieson the difficult time in the city featured Jim Belushi playing Martinelli.

Martinelli purchased a printing company in the late 1940s that went on to become Today Media, a publisher of regional magazines. Its holdings include Delaware Today, Delaware Business Times, The Hunt, Mainline Todayand Westchester Magazine.

Survivors include his son, Rob Martinelli, CEO of Today Media.
