An event marking a new communications strategy that emphasizes the positive side of Wilmington has been postponed, due to weather.

The new promotion effort, to be known as Wilmington Love,  was to have been unveiled late Monday afternoon.

Mayor Mike Purzycki said because of the uncertainly about today’s weather and soggy ground conditions at Rodney Square, the City will shortly select a new date for the community party/celebration and issue another announcement.

“We could have moved the event indoors, but we wanted to preserve the community celebration atmosphere so that more people can enjoy the event and become part of the new campaign,” said  Purzycki. “We’ll regroup, line up the entertainment and the food trucks, re-confirm with the more than 50 neighborhood and community organizations that committed to be with us today, and schedule the event in the very near future.”

The multiple-year effort will tell the stories of Wilmington and its people through narratives and videos to audiences within the city, regionally and nationally, a release stated.

The campaign will feature two new websites, three new YouTube channels and various social media platforms. The content for the campaign will come from the people of Wilmington.

Wilmington has been struggling with its image as a high crime area that came to a climax a few years ago with Newsweek’s  Murdertown USA  story.

The city now has a new mayor and police chief, as well as continuing commercial investments in downtown and the riverfront. The city’s murder rate has also shown a sharp drop.
