Wegmans opening store in Lancaster on Sunday

Wegmans Food Markets will open a location inLancaster,PA on Sunday as the family-owned chain moves toward the 100-store mark.

The 120,000-square-foot store will employ 475 at a location on the southwest corner of Harrisburg Pike and Route 30

The family-owned company opened a store across the Delaware line in Glen Mills a couple of years ago, with initial advertising aimed at the Delaware market.

Long before Wegmans announced plans to build the store, the family-owned company received hundreds of requests. The store is well known for its customer service and high rankings as a good place to work.

Similar requests have been made in Delaware. However, northern New Castle County has few available sites that fit its large-format stores, and land prices are high. (See story from 2015).

A Wegmans spokesperson on Friday confirmed the company has no plans at the current time to expand to Delaware.

Analysis: No Wegmans supermarkets on the horizon despite nearby expansion

The Lancaster store has three firsts for the company’s Pennsylvania locations:

The Burger Bar, Arestaurant that serves burgers and sandwiches, fresh salads, soup, sides, kids’ meals, and beer and wine by the glass

–Italian pizza is made to order from a custom rotating brick-hearth oven, and quick-fired at 800 degrees on volcanic stone from Mt. Vesuvius in Italy

– A made-to-order salad station. Wegmans stores feature large departments that appeal to foodies with sushi, cheeses, hot meals to go and other features.

Wegmans works to provide a “European market” approach, with large specialty departments offering cheese, wine and beer, deli products and meals to go. At the same time, the store runs specials and offers private label products that keep its prices more competitive with other chains.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a 98-store chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

Wegmans has been named one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ by Fortune magazine for 21 consecutive years, ranking #2 in 2018.
