Fire causes $500,000 in damage at former AKT spacecraft site near Elkton


A fire early Saturday morning caused half a million dollars in damage at the Northrup Grumman rocket site (formerly ATK) at 55 Thiokol Road, Elkton, MD.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office saidthe fire caused $20,000 in damage to the structure and $480,000 damage to contents. The building housed a boiler room.

An audible alarm alerted security officers who arrived within minutes and found no active fire or smoke. About 15 minutes later, security officers observed smoke & flames coming from the building.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the building and no other structures were reported to have suffered damage.

The site produces propulsion systems for spacecraft.
