Good afternoon,

For those of us who are used to elections taking place on Tuesdays, Thursday’s primary may come as a surprise.

It turns out that a couple of years ago,  the  General Assembly moved  the date of 2018 Primary Election from Tuesday, Sept. 11  to Thursday, Sept. 6.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The election features primary battles in both parties, with candidates vying for the U.S. Senate nomination from both parties and Republicans also running for the state’s lone U.S. House seat.

Other hot races on the Democratic side come for the post of State Auditor and Attorney General. The auditor’s race has its share of drama. Click here  for one of the stories related to the primary battle.

The campaign that has made the most noise of late has been the race between long-time U.S. Sen. Tom Carper and Kerri Harris, Dover, an Air Force veteran from Dover  Harris claims Carper is the tool of corporate interests.

Harris’ campaign gained some national attention from left-leaning sites like The Intercept and  Daily Beast after Congressional upsets that last night included a deep blue district in Massachusetts.

On the Republican side, the race is between two Rob Arlett, a Sussex County Council member and Gene Truono, a retired financial services executive. We did see some fireworks when   Truono won an endorsement from a Delaware gun rights group.

The wild card with this election will be how many people show up at the polls.  Will the Thursday date depress turnout even below the traditionally dismal figures or will some interesting races do the opposite?

At any rate, here’s a list of primary candidates. Make plans to vote tomorrow. – Doug Rainey, publisher.
