As usual, The Delaware Burger Battle led to a food coma or two.

The annual event, held outside the Cauffiel House in the Bellevue State Park area off Philadelphia Pike, is a must for those with a fondness for the American classic.

Proceeds from the all-volunteer event go to Food Bank of Delaware and the ProStart program, which helps young people launch careers in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

The burger samples seemed to be bigger this year or maybe it’s our imagination. Whatever the case, no one left hungry.

Winners, drum roll please, were:

  • Home Grown Café in Newark for Best Alternative Burger for a mushroom-based patty.
  • Chelsea Tavern in downtown Wilmington took Critics Choice and Red Fire Grill and Steakhouse in Hockessin was voted the People’s Choice. Both have been winners in the Burger Battle, which started in 2012.
  • Runner-up in both the Critics and People’s Choice categories was downtown Wilmington newcomer Farmer & the Cow, a burger spot that’s getting rave reviews in the early going and received some of our votes.

Wortha mention is Maiale Deli and Salumeria, in Wilmington, which came up with Scotch Egg burger that featured short rib stuffed with cheddar and fontina cheese, rolled in Panko and deep fried. A heart defibrillator was not included.

The creation followed up on the success of the Mexicano Burger at a previous Burger Battle. The burger ended up on Maiale ’s permanent menu.

Yet another tasty discovery was a burger from bison specialist Ted’s Montana Grill. Ted’s burger fixins’ were outstanding.
