Delaware ranks as the 19th least expensive state when it comes to energy costs.
The financial website WalletHub listed states for all energy costs, including fuel oil and gasoline.
Ranking No. 1 with the lowest energy costs was oil and coal-rich Wyoming, with the District of Columbia at No. 51.
Delaware did rank one spot ahead of Texas, which despite its vast resources had slightly higher energy costs.
Boosting Delaware’s ranking were the state’s low gas prices, which come after years of not raising the gas tax. The state’s relatively high fuel oil prices also lowered the ranking.
Delaware’s electric rates have been moving toward the middle of the pack for consumers, due to energy conservation and sluggish demand. However, commercial electric rates have been among the highest in the nation. Commercial rates were not part of the WalletHub report.
The state’s mandates for a gradual increase in electricity from alternate sources, such as solar and wind, have been blamed for the higher rates. The higher commercial rates have been viewed as an economic disadvantage for the state.
