The Delaware College of Art and Design in downtown Wilmington has invited students of the defunct Art Institute of Philadelphia to check out their programs.

The Art Institute of Philadelphia will cease to operate as of Aug. 28. DCAD’s fall semester  starts the same day. Other institutions have also made a pitch for students.

The company  is closing a dozen and a half schools around the nation after a for-profit education company sold the schools to a nonprofit. The schools had seen a long-running decline in enrollment.

Like the Art Institute of Philadelphia, DCAD offers two-year degree studies in animation and graphic design. These and DCAD’s other two-year associate’s programs – in fine arts, illustration, and photography – prepare students for transfer into bachelor’s programs at four-year colleges and universities, a DCAD release stated.

In addition, DCAD’s continuing education program offers professional development courses in the Art Institute of Philadelphia majors of interior design and graphic and web design.

Full-time degree-program tuition at DCAD is approximately $24,000 per year – about the same as was charged by the Art Institute of Philadelphia.

This is significantly less than the $30,000 to $40,000 charged per year at most four-year art and design schools in the United States. Costs for continuing education courses vary.

“Our admissions deadline for Fall 2018 is Aug. 1, and students who would have been entering their first or second year at the Art Institute of Philadelphia are welcome to contact us to see how they could begin or continue their higher education without interruption at DCAD,” said Dean Katy Ro. “As an accredited, nonprofit institution, DCAD is eager to assist students whose career goals require completion of a high-quality professional art and design program.”

DCAD previously worked to enroll art and design students affected by the closure of Antonelli Institute, and a number of students planning to study at the Art Institute of Philadelphia this year already have contacted DCAD.

Others interested in exploring degree-program enrollment options at DCAD for Fall 2018 can  contact the Admissions Office  at  admissions@dcad.edu. Anyone interested in non-degree classes should visit campus or contact Randle Reed at (302) 622-8000ext. 123, or rreed@dcad.edu

DCAD has been working to raise its profile in Delaware and I  the region. It recently hired a new president.
