M&T Bank  announces promotions

Richard Gieseler   has been promoted to Group Vice President, working with M&T’s Credit Lifecycle Management Program team responsible for the multi-year implementation of a new loan origination system within M&T Bank. Gieseler has been with M&T since 2007 serving in several leadership roles, most recently as the Group Manager for M&T Bank’s Delaware Commercial Real Estate division, which he transitioned from in early 2016.

He received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and a BS in Economics from the United State Military Academy at West Point. [Not a valid template]

Barnaby “Barney” Hughes was named Delaware- Maryland Eastern Shore Regiona l Manager for the business banking division. Hughes has been with M&T for 23 years, having most recently held the title of Business Banking Manager for M&T’s Chesapeake Region.

Hughes holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Saint Michael’s College, Vermont and an MBA in Finance and Investments from The George Washington University.

As an active member of the community, Hughes serves on the Board of Directors for the Delaware Better Business Bureau and the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce.

University of Delaware names engineering dean

Levi T. Thompson, the Richard E. Balzhiser Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, has been named dean of the University of Delaware’s College of Engineering, effective Oct. 1, UD President Dennis Assanis and Provost Robin W. Morgan announced today. 

Thompson, who earned his bachelor of chemical engineering degree at UD in 1981, succeeds Babatunde Ogunnaike, who has led the college since 2011 and will be returning to the college faculty. After graduating from UD, Thompson went on to earn two master’s degrees from the University of Michigan in chemical engineering and nuclear engineering, as well as his doctorate in chemical engineering.

Governor’s Heritage Award given to Rubeinstein

Governor John Carney presented the Governor’s Heritage Award to Harvey Rubenstein, Esq.

Rubenstein, has served as a member of the Delaware Heritage Commission for over 40 years, has authored numerous books about Delaware History, served as the president of both the Delaware State Bar Association and the Delaware Bar Foundation, and is considered to be one of Delaware’s preeminent Historians. 

The Governor’s Heritage Award was established in 2003 by the Office of the Secretary of State. The award is given to an individual who “has made a distinguished contribution to the recognition, preservation, and celebration of Delaware’s heritage.” Since the first award was presented to Dr. John A Munroe, the majority of the ceremonies have been held at the Delaware Public Archives. A bronze plaque that honors these individuals is located outside of the Delaware Room within the Public Archives building.

STRIDE announces board members

The Science, Technology and Research Institute of Delaware (STRIDE) announced its new Board of Directors. Board now includes three new members who have prominent positions in public or academic life. 

  • Kurt Foreman  is an expert in economic development and leads the Delaware Prosperity Partnership. Prior to joining DPP this spring, he held leading roles with local and regional economic development organizations in the Washington DC area, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
  • Dr Julius Korley,  is an entrepreneur and scientist who co-founded biomedical engineering firm Affinity Therapeutics. He is also Director of Entrepreneurship and Strategic Partnerships for College of Engineering at the University of Delaware.
  • Dr. Charles Riordan serves as Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Innovation at the University of Delaware with responsibility for advancing the University’s research enterprise. This includes oversight of the University’s Research Office, five University-wide research institutes, core facilities and the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships.

The Board elected the following officers: President: James Dinnage, Vice-President: Debora Massouda,  Treasurer: Donald Durandetta, and Secretary: James Dinnage

The Board also elected the first three members of its Advisory Council. Two of them,  Kurt Adams   and  Sarah Rush,  are scientists and founding members of STRIDE. The third is Omari Scott Simmons, an Associate Professor of Law at Wake Forest University School of Law and the Executive Director of the Simmons Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization promoting college access for vulnerable students.

Sanders named Nemours  chief marketing officer

Nemours Children’s Health System today announced Sarah C. Sanders has been named Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer. In this newly created role, Sanders will lead the multi-state health system’s local, regional and national marketing strategy to help advance the health of children and their families. She will report to David J. Bailey, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Nemours.

As the inaugural Chief Marketing Officer, Sanders will lead the advancement of marketing and communications as an increasingly vital partner in promoting the organization’s mission and robust patient-focused environment. In this role, she will manage Nemours’ marketing and communications Associates in the areas of branding, public relations, internal communications and clinical service line support. These geographically diverse teams are located in Central Florida, the Delaware Valley, and North Florida.

Galdi joins Beebe practice

Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Group named  OB/GYN Luisa Galdi, DO, to its Women’s Health – Plantations practice.

Galdi received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Reading Hospital in West Reading. She will also see patients at Beebe’s Georgetown location. 

Hynes joins Gallo

Sales Associate  Tracy Hynes  has joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty in their Rehoboth Beach office. 

She graduated from Wilmington University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice.
