Our view: A near miss on Route 1

Good morning all,

Several years ago,  we decided to take an ill-advised trip down Route 1.

The weather could have been better.

My nephew was visiting from Australia and wanted to take a  peek at the Atlantic. It sounded like a good idea for former Midwesterners not afraid of a flake or two

Somewhere along an icy  Route 1,  a vehicle went squirrely ln the northbound lane and made its way across the median. The driver still did not have control when it careened toward our humble people carrier.

The near miss from long ago came to mind as five of six family members perished in a Friday afternoon accident on another stretch of Route 1.

We do know that four of the five victims were not properly restrained, and other details will come to light as the investigation continues.

One thing is clear – the state has not done enough to deal with the issue of out-of-control vehicles crossing the median.

Also happening far too often are vehicles going the wrong way on some sections of  Route 1.  Drunk driving is often a  factor. Still,  other states often go to greater lengths in terms of signage, lighting etc. in hopes that even impaired drivers get the message.

Work has been done on some sections of Route 1. I am fairly certain the area where we had our near miss, has cable restraints.

A  fast-track solution, even if it involves the temporary placement of unsightly  Jersey Walls, should be undertaken as soon as possible. Others have similar views. Here’s a link to a Change.org petition

When vehicles of various ages and sizes are moving at high speeds,   terrible things can happen. It is equally clear that more can and should be done. – Doug and Sharon Rainey.
