Cable giant Comcast  suffered a massive outage on Friday afternoon

As of 3.:45 p.m.,  Delaware customers were reporting that service had been restored.

The service affected the company’s Xfinity cable service and its Comcast Business customers.

The company posted the following Twitter message.

“We identified 2 unrelated fiber cuts to our network backbone providers. Our engineers are restoring services to business & residential internet, tv & voice customers. Apologies to those affected.”

Earlier, it had issued the following:

“One of Comcast’s large backbone network partners had a fiber cut that we believe is also impacting other providers. It is currently affecting our business and residential internet, video and voice customers.”

An outage map showed a large portion of the East Coast, Midwest, and Pacific Coast without service for a time,  according to DownDetector.

The website reported a sharp drop in outage reports by 4 p.m., with the trend continuing throughout the weekend.

For a time even DownDetector was difficult to access, perhaps because of inquiries on Comcast.

Reports indicated that the outage mainly affected cable service, although there were reports of the loss of Internet and phone service. There were also scattered reports of outages at Internet Service Providers. (ISPs).

Comcast Business reported an outage earlier this month that affected some commercial phone customers on the East Coast.

The competing Verizon FIOS system in portions of Delaware appeared to be functioning normally.
