A section of heavily traveled  Route 72 in the Bear-Glasgow area  will be closed for much of the summer beginning at 10 p.m on Monday night.

The closing, slated for Sunday night, was delayed due to weather.

The section of Route 72 (Sunset Lake Road) will be closed between Old Baltimore Pike and U.S. Route 40. A Rite Aid store is located at the intersection.  The project is expected to last until Aug. 27th, depending on weather, the Delaware Department of Transportation announced

Contractor A-Del will replace a culvert and restore a stream at Belltown Run. A-Del was the low bidder in a more than $12 million project that got underway a few weeks ago and will take more than two and a half years.

Local traffic will have access north and south of these locations.

Detours posted by DelDOT are as follows:

  • Route  72 northbound through traffic: Left onto US 40/Pulaski Highway westbound, right onto SR 896/Summit Bridge Road northbound, right onto Old Baltimore Pike eastbound, end detour at 72.
  • Route  72 southbound traffic: Right onto SR 4/Christiana Parkway westbound, left onto SR 896/South College Avenue, left onto US 40/Pulaski Highway eastbound, end of detour at SR 72.

In  announcing the closing in a Facebook Post State Sen. Bryan Townsend, D-Newark,  said DeDOT should have provided more notice to the public and legislators. The closing was apparently announced this week.

He did note that  DelDOT will make signal timing adjustments to accommodate the additional traffic. The summer time frame was selected, due to the lack of school traffic bus traffic on the busy highway.
