Good morning,
Leave it to PETA to not be one-upped over an overturned chicken truck.
The highly publicized tractor-trailer crash near Middletown last week led to an outpouring of sympathy for the doomed birds that were headed for processing.
One badly injured bird that was named June later died. Liberation Philly, which wants animals to be recognized as persons, apparently launched a fund-raising campaign for the estimated $2,000 cost.
PETA did not want Liberation to steal the spotlight.
According to a press release, PETA now wants to erect a billboard on Route 301, carrying the message, I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
“This devastating crash left countless birds dead or mangled and suffering on the side of the highway,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard would send an important message that the best way to prevent these tragedies is to keep smart, sensitive chickens off the road in the first place by going vegan.”
One thought comes to mind in reading the above paragraph.
Wouldn’t it be better to spend that billboard and vet treatment money on child safety?
None of this is intended to be a criticism of laudable efforts to improve treatment of chickens. Suggested practices have been widely adopted by Delmarva’s poultry industry.
At the risk of being politically incorrect, chicken on the grill sounds good this weekend. I’ll be back on Monday. – Doug Rainey, publisher.
