NASCAR team owner suffers broken jaw after punch from former crew member

Fights are not unknown on the  NASCAR circuit.

Fighting with the owner is another thing.

Dover Police arrested Lawrence Hayden, a 33-year-old former crew member/employee of a NASCAR Xfinity Series race team and resident of Concord,  NC.

At  10:51 a.m., Friday, officers were called to the infield of the Dover International Speedway.

It was reported that Hayden and team owner Jerry Hattaway, 56, were involved in an argument over issues pertaining to Hayden’s employment with the team. 

 During the exchange,  police reported Hayden punched  Hattaway, with the team owner suffering a broken jaw.  Hattaway was initially treated at the Fan Care Center at Dover International Speedway and was later transferred to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital for further treatment.

Hayden was taken into custody and was charged with one count of Assault 2nd Degree.  Hayden was given a $500 secured bond on the single charge.

Jerry and Phyllis Hattaway own JP Motorsports, a team that races Toyota Camrys. 

The team was in Dover for one of Dover International Speedway’s two  NASCAR week.
