New Castle County Register Ciro Poppiti announced that his office has generated more than $2.5 million for New Castle County through an initiative called Operation Backlog.

The $2.5 million has been collected over the past seven years.

Between the years 2000 and 2010, there were several thousand estates opened in New Castle County that never closed.  In many cases, no information was ever filed either with the county, the beneficiaries, or creditors.  Poppiti created Operation Backlog as a focused effort to update or close these estates.

“I am very proud that we have been able to collect more than $2.5 million for the county,” said Poppiti.  “I am prouder still that Operation Backlog has been a mechanism by which over $140 million in estate assets have been accounted for to beneficiaries and creditors.”

Through the program,  more than 1,800 old estates have been updated or closed.

“This has been a tremendous team effort,” said Poppiti, “including my staff, our colleagues throughout County government, support from County Council, and diligence by attorney practitioners.”

Operation Backlog was awarded the Best Practices Award by the National Association of County Recorders, Election Officials, and Clerks, in July 2013.
