ALDI will open its first store in the Wilmington area  as part of a $3.4 billion investment to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022.

The Wilmington area  store at  2205 Farrand Drive in Marshallton will be the third ALDI store in Delaware. ALDI opened its first two Delaware stores in Camden and Middletown in 2016.

ALDI will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 17, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a giveaway offering gift cards to the first 100 customers. Shoppers can also sample ALDI-brand foods and enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce.

“Wilmington shoppers deserve a better choice when it comes to grocery shopping,” said Bob Grammer, Center Valley division vice president for ALDI. “ALDI is specially designed to save customers time and money. People will quickly see and experience the many ways we deliver high-quality food at affordable prices. That’s why we do everything we do.”

The Wilmington store will focus on fresh food, produce, dairy and baked goods. ALDI stores also feature open ceilings, natural lighting, and environmentally-friendly building materials.

As part of the company’s aggressive expansion plans, ALDI is adding 25,000 new jobs in stores, warehouses, and offices nationwide by 2022.

The company is known for lean staffing of stores and paying above-market wages that compare favorably with union grocery stores and run above the pay scales of Walmart.

ALDI operates more than 1,750 U.S. stores in 35 states.  For more information about ALDI, visit aldi.us
