Insurance executive David Francis Lyons has died. He was 58.

The son of a well known Wilmington dentist, Lyons founded Lyons Companies, which grew the state’s largest independent insurance agencies over a three-decade-long period. Lyons is based near Wilmington and has 50 employees.

Lyons served as mayor of Henlopen Acres in Sussex County and was a member of the University of Delaware Board of Trustees.

A graduate of Tatnall School and Franklin and Marshall College, Lyons was known regionally for sponsoring an annual economic forecast at the University of  Delaware in Newark.

The event featured Federal Reserve governors and other notables and was often covered by the financial press for indications on the future course of interest rates.

Lyons is survived by his wife Catharine and two sons, all of whom work in the business.

Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 2013 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington.
