The Army Corps of Engineers has delayed a beach replenishment program for Fenwick Island until July.

According to a release from the Town of Fenwick Island,  the project will begin during the heart of the tourist season in early July and be completed at the end of the month. The project will run around the clock for an estimated 13 days, weather permitting.

The project extends from Bethany Beach and extends to Fenwick Island, which at the southern edge of Delaware near Ocean City, MD.

The overall project purpose is to place approximately 659,000 cubic yards of beach fill in Bethany Beach, 500,000 cubic yards in South Bethany and 278,000 cubic yards in Fenwick Island.

The work also includes the construction or repair of pedestrian, vehicle, and  Americans With Disabilities Act-accessible dune crossovers; the partial demolition of an ADA accessible crossover, including piles, post and rail fence; planting dune grass, and install new sand fence and post and rail fence.

Dune grass planting will be completed between November 15, and April 15, 2019.

The contractor has been cautioned that unexploded ordinance has previously been uncovered within the project limits.  Coastal Delaware was the site of coastal defense and training activities during World War II.

All beach fill will be screened and any suspected materials will be properly disposed of by on-site experts.

Great Lakes, a marine contractor based in Illinois, will handle the work.
