Four deaths from apparent heroin overdoses were reported in New Castle County
New Castle County Pollice were called in three separate incidents where a person was found dead and evidence of heroin use was recovered. Police went to another location where NARCAN was used to save an individual. The incidents occurred in the Bear, Brandywine and Claymont areas.
The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services reported a fourth death. DHSS is concerned that a spike in overdoses could occur over the holidays, a time when users may attempt to get clean and are susceptible to an overdoseif a relapse takes place.
The cause of death for each individual has yet to be determined by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. Spikes in deaths can also occur when fentanyl is involved in the overdose.
New Castle County Police noted that the Hero Help initiative is available.
Hero Help is a collaboration of police, Delaware Department of Justice and state Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health to provide drug and/or alcohol addiction treatment to qualifying adults who contact police and ask for treatment.

To be eligible for the program, the individual has to be a Delaware resident 18-years-old or older, have no violent criminal convictions, and voluntarily enroll in the program.
