Crafting a key industry in Delaware

Happy Friday,

This edition of the newsletter features stories on the largest and one of the smallest craft alcohol beverage businesses in Delaware.

Nationally known Dogfish Head is getting national attention for its SeaQench.  The brew targets a sweet spot in the craft brew market –  beverages with fewer calories, minerals and electrolytes. SeaQuench is now on my to-drink list.

Not far away from the Dogfish brewery in Milton, Brimming Horn is turning out honey-based Mead that to borrow a phrase from Dogfish  Head founder Sam Calagione is  “off center.” How else would you describe a mead with tomatoes lime and honey that somehow has “peach” in its name?

Check out the story below for the peach angle.

The efforts of Dogfish Head and Brimming Horn are part of an artisanal boom in the state that seems to be picking up steam. We should see another three breweries in the coming year just in New Castle County.

While on the subject of Mead, the weekend is a good time to check out the state’s other commercial operation, Liquid Alchemy, located near Wilmington.

Meanwhile, upwards of two dozen breweries, distilleries, cideries and brewpubs in the state now employ hundreds of people.

Want an alcohol-free option?

Fordham and Dominion in Dover offers soft drinks that are worth checking out, based on a couple of bottles of root beer that I managed to score.

Enjoy your weekend with the beverage of your choice. The newsletter returns on Monday. – Doug Rainey, Publisher.
