Fire damages New Castle apartment building

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office has determined that a  Friday afternoon apartment building fire in New Castle was accidental.

The fire reported shortly before 5:00 p.m. broke out at the Castlebrook Apartments at 550 South DuPont Highway. 

The Wilmington Manor Fire Company arrived on the scene and found smoke pouring from a three story occupied apartment building.  The Good Will Fire  Co., New Castle, assisted. 

State fire marshal deputies were called to the scene and conducted the investigation.  The fire started on the stove top in the kitchen of a 2nd-floor apartment.  The flames spread throughout the apartment and smoke, along with  heat filled the building. 

Twelve apartment units have been damaged.  The apartment management will coordinate temporary housing.  The exact number of people displaced is not known at this time.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.  There were no reported injuries.  The building’s fire alarm system activated inside the building.
