Delmarva Power is soliciting proposals for Wind Renewable Energy Credits for customers in the State of Delaware.

Delmarva Power is seeking bids for RECs from one or more wind generating facilities with a total capacity of up to 40  megawatts for 2017-2018 and for a term of 10 to 15 years.

The wind energy mandates have been criticized in Delaware, since the state is not suited for large land wind farms that would employ workers in construction and maintenance.

Instead,  wind  generated at wind farms in Pennsylvania and other states and has little impact on the Delaware economy.

Delaware has been a leader in solar power, which is generated on Delaware rooftops and other areas. Prices have dropped sharply for solar panels.

The Bluewater Wind  offshore project near Rehoboth Beach  that would have involved Delmarva buying power to meet its alternative energy mandates was canceled earlier in the decade.

Other states are now working on projects, despite objections from some residents.

The University of Delaware continues to do research on wind power, with scientists making the case that off-shore has the potential of supplying much of the region’s power.  According to scientists,  connections to various windpower sites along the East Coast would balance out the ups and downs of wind speeds, since it is rare for no area to see breezes.
