Shake Shack opens in Christiana Fashion Center


Shake Shack has quietly opened its doors at the Christiana Fashion Center.

Word of the opening of the fast-growing upscale burger chain got around, and the line was out the door at noon on Wednesday. Seating was available.inside, but later reports indicated the resaurant became more crowded.

The chain has generated buzz out of proportion to its size, thanks in part to its original locations in New York City that still see long lines at various times.

The chain was founded by well-known New York City upscale restaurantowner Danny Meyer.


The publicly traded company now has corporate-owned restaurants from coast to coast and overseas. (See earlier story below)

The location,the first for Shake Shack in Delaware, is now listed on the company’s website. The opening should push Shake Shack past the 100-location figure.

The newest Shake Shack has a local touch with a New Castle “Concrete” ice cream offering with custard and cookie butter, chocolate toffee, and chocolate sprinkles).

Five percent of the sales of the Concrete go to the Food Bank of Delaware and employees will volunteer at Food Bank events.

Shake Shack offers well-seasoned hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs fries, custard, shakes, and related items ata price point that appears to be slightlyabove the figure for Five Guys, which has some locations in Delaware.

The company says it offers “all natural” food and cage-free chicken. Shake Shake also offers craft beer and wine, according to a blog post announcing the opening.

The decor of the Shake Shack uses sustainable materialsincluding tabletops fromreclaimed bowling alley lanes byCounterEvolution; chairs are designed byUhuruusing sustainable materials; booths using lumber certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council; and walls cladin reclaimed heart pine and Wyoming snow fence.

Shake Shack’s burgers have some resemblance to the offerings of the locally founded Wayback chain, formerly Jake’s. Wayback’s local footprint has been shrinking as franchised stores are closed.

Five Guys,which has some stores in ‘Delaware, is often ranked alongside Shake Shack in listings of the tastiest burgers. Another highly ranked chain In-N-Out mainly operates on the West Coast and offers burgers at lower prices.

Other restaurant offerings at the Fashion Center, which is adjacent to Christiana Mall, are Zoup!, Zoe’s Kitchen and Ted’s Montana Grill.
