The day-long session, which took place at the Wilmington Public Library, offered career advice workshops and a healthy-living session to help Delaware-area low-income men succeed in the workplace. By providing such tools, participants – many of whom have been laid-off, incarcerated or on public assistance – can seek full-time work and help strengthen their families’ financial future, a UnitedHealthcare release stated.

“Chronic unemployment and underemployment pose huge challenges to Wilmington and other major American cities,” said Hanifa Shabazz, Wilmington city council president-elect.  “By preparing these young men for re-entry into the workforce, MenzFit, One Village Alliance and Connections Community Support Programs are helping to lift people out of poverty and into gainful employment opportunities that change lives.”

“For many people, employment is key to their self-esteem and well-being,” said Darrin Johnson, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Delaware. “UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to host today’s ‘Day of Empowerment’ that helps young men improve their quality of life.”
