hqdefaultWell-known furniture store owner  John P. “Johnny” Janosik died Friday night at Nanticoke Memorial Hosptial Seaford. He was 90.

Janosik was well known on Delmarva  for building one of the nation’s 100 largest furniture stores from a former poultry house in Laurel, DE

Janosik grew up in Hopewell, VA and served in World War II.

In the early 1950s, he opened an  appliance and  furniture store, which expanded into one of the largest furniture  stores on the East Coast.

The store  became well known, thanks in part to its heavy use of television advertising on the  Delmarva Peninsula,   and the slogan, “Longest Store on the Shore with the Shortest Prices.”

Janosik went on to open a store in Dover. Ground is slated to be broken on a new store in Dover this week.

Janosik was also active in philanthropic activities on the Easter Shore.

According to the death notice, mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 532 East Stein Highway Seaford at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Laurel.

A celebration of life will also be held from 3 to 6 p.m., with food and fellowship at the Laurel Fire Department Hall 205 W. 10th St. Laurel.
