Delmarva Power customers will see lower rates beginning in June.

The new Standard Offer Service (SOS) Rates will have a  typical customer who uses about 1,000-kilowatt hours of electricity per month paying $6.80 less or about 4.6 percent.

Charges for SOS equal about two-thirds of your bill.

The decrease stems from current business practices and contract procurements over a three year period. The decrease is on top of last year’s decline of   2.48.

Small business electric charges vary.

Delmarva has filed for a rate increase for the costs of delivering that electricity that if approved by the Delaware Public Service Commission would be nearly equal to the last two years of power rate reductions.

The utility says it needs to continue to improve the reliability of the grid. Reliability has improved over the years after a major failure in the 1990s.

Delmarva is now owned by Exelon, which has reported lower wholesale power prices have been affecting its power generation business, which has an office in Kennett Square, PA.

That business operates separately from the utility side of the business. Delmarva bids for power via n auction process and does not earn a profit on the power side of the buisness and simply passes along the rate.
