Refinery reports hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide releases

Delaware City Refinery towersThe Delaware City Refining Co. reported the release of more than 500 pounds of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide into the air at 12:17 p.m. on Wednesday.

Reports of such releases are required by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.  The release is current under investigation.

This chemical or substance is considered to be hazardous by the EPA.

This incident is currently under investigation by DNREC.

The refinery reported a problem with the hydrocracker that resulted in a flaring event and a release of the toxic emissions. The unit was being depressurized to stop the release.

The refinery reported a serious outage in late January, due to a power failure. The incident prompted an early maintenance turnaround at the refinery that refines a variety of grades of crude oil.
