image001Goldey-Beacom College announced a year-long series of events and activities focusing on the entrepreneur.

The events coincide with the unveiling of two new degree programs  – a  Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Master of Business Administration with a Concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies. Coursework begins in fall 2016 for the new degree programs. Students may now enroll and begin related coursework.

In support of the new programs, the  college has planned a year-long celebration.

“The addition of these programs is in the true spirit of Goldey-Beacom College and its entrepreneurial roots of 1886. In a day and age where business is often seen as regimented and segmented, entrepreneurial studies embrace outside-of-the-box thinking, independence and determination, traits that we always strive to bring out in our students. We wanted to support these new study programs with some great special events where entrepreneurs can share, mentor and motivate others along the same road,” stated college president Gary Wirt.

The evening of April 4 kicks off the Year of the Entrepreneur with “A Panel Discussion: The Entrepreneurial Edge” from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Joseph West Jones College Center. Students, faculty and the community will hear experiences from four local,   business leaders – Robert Banner, owner of Thunder Stix Baseball and Softball Academy; Bob Downing, co-Founder and CEO of Delaware Sports League; Marian Young, majority owner of Brightfields, Inc.; and Greg Star, founding partner of Carvertise. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel and mingle with the speakers over refreshments afterward.

Christopher Kenny, Esq., will be the commencement speaker at the  college’s 129th graduation on May 6. Kenny is President and CEO of ShopRites of Delaware, a family-held supermarket chain of six stores, employing more than  1,500 people.

A fall 2016 panel discussion is tentatively scheduled for late September. “The Story of the Start: A Panel Discussion” will focus on start-up efforts that at first  came up short.

Event organizer, Dr. Jeffery Thurley,  stated:  “This will give those in attendance a chance to learn what to avoid, how to assess risk and increase the likelihood of a successful start-up. Often we learn more from our mistakes than our successes.” The college also plans to have another keynote speaker event in fall 2016.

Founded in 1886, the college offers graduate and undergraduate degrees with majors in psychology, economics, criminal justice, English, and all areas of business. With alumni from 26 states and 66 nations, Goldey-Beacom College is located in Pike Creek Valley. The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs, and the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education.
