(Updated) Four victims identified in deaths at apartment complex

New Castle County Police have identified  victims  at the Hidden Valley Apartment complex near Wilmington, also known as The Evergreen Apartments at Riverfront Heights.

An environmental cause of the deaths is being probed, with carbon monoxide believed to be the top prospect.

The four victims from the incident have been positively identified as:

  • 60-year-old Carl Dunfee from building G.
  • 58-year-old Veronica Mousely from building G
  • 72-year-old Andrew Spanakos from building G
  • 56-year-old Nancy Uniacke from building G (different apartment than the previous three)

At about  five  p.m., Friday. New Castle County Police was called to the 500 block of Homestead Rd at the Hidden Valley complex west of Wilmington.

Officers found three adults and one dog were dead.  Officers checked the apartment and saw no signs of foul play.

Further examination of the scene alerted officers to a possible environmental issue.  Details were not disclosed  Officers then began to evacuate the building and discovered another dead individual inside a different apartment.

Several other residents of the building were evacuated.

Seven other occupants are being treated at local hospitals.  The seven,   four adults and three children.  Their condition is believed to be stable.

The New Castle County Criminal Investigation Unit was on the scene and is actively investigating this incident along with the following agencies: New Castle County Paramedics, New Castle County Office of Emergency Management, The Delaware Division of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, The New Castle County Hazmat Decon Team, Five Points Fire Company, and other area fire companies.

Apartment buildings “F” and “G” have been evacuated and are closed pending this investigation.

The Red Cross was contacted. Any displaced resident should call the apartment complex management at (302) 656-1827.

The identities of the victims and notification of next of kin is still pending at this time.
