Brond joins ab+c as VP

ab+c Creative Intelligence, Wilmington named David Brond as its new Vice President/Director of Account Services, effective June 15. Brond is best known locally for heading marketing and branding efforts at the University of Delaware.

He succeeds Michael Gallagher, who retires this month after 27 years at the agency. In this post, Brond will be responsible for overseeing and strategically guiding all of ab+c’s client relationships.

Brond has more than 25 years of experience as a strategic communications and marketing leader in a variety of industries, most notably health care and higher education. His most recent appointment was as Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY.

Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President for Communications and Marketing at Georgia Regents University and Georgia Regents Health System, as well as Professor of Business at the Hull College of Business, Georgia Regents University in Augusta.

From 2008 to 2012, Brond was Vice President for Communications and Marketing at the University of Delaware. In addition, he has held a variety of management positions with the University of Maryland Medical System, KPMG Peat Marwick, GBMC Healthcare and Ernst & Young.

Brond received both an MBA and M.H.A. from Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University.

Navient names group presidents

Navient  announced the appointment of John Kane as group president for asset recovery and business services, and John (Jeff) F. Whorley Jr. as group president for asset management and servicing.

Kane played a leadership role in the successful spin-off of Navient, and then served as chief operating officer during Navient’s first year as an independent company.

He first joined the company in 2008, after 17 years managing various consumer credit operations at MBNA and Bank of America. Kane received a bachelor’s degree from University of Delaware.

Whorley is an experienced leader in student loan servicing and asset recovery, serving in various executive roles at USA Group and Sallie Mae between 1995 and 2007.

He spent the last six years leading higher education technology start-ups.  Whorley received a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South (Sewanee), and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Indianapolis.

Four join Vision Coalition leadership team

The Vision Coalition of Delaware has added four new members to its leadership team. The Vision Coalition of Delaware, which developed the Vision 2015 plan to improve public education, includes members from a broad range of public, private, and civic groups. The leadership team meets regularly to align efforts, evaluate progress, and sustain momentum. This fall, the group will release its next 10-year vision to continue work to improve Delaware public schools.

The new members are: Lamont Browne, Executive director, EastSide Charter School, Family Foundations Academy; Jorge Melendez, Vice President, Delaware State Board of Education; Susan Perry-Manning, executive director, Delaware Office of Early Learning; and Gary Stockbridge, president, Delmarva Power.

Browne is the executive director of the EastSide Charter School and Family Foundations Academy. He has spent the past eight years in various roles in charter and district schools in Delaware and Pennsylvania. He started his career as a math teacher at Delaware’s A.I. duPont Middle School. Most recently, he has served as principal at the Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School as well as the Henry Edmunds School within the School District of Philadelphia.

Melendez is a career agent for Transamerica Agency Network and also serves as Vice President of the Delaware State Board of Education. He retired from PNC Bank in 2013, most recently serving as assistant vice president, branch manager, and security officer.

Melendez was previously a member of the Sussex County Rotary Club and served as its treasurer.

Perry-Manning is the executive director of the Delaware Office of Early Learning. She most recently served as the founding executive director for the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation.

She previously served as the vice president and senior director for policy and programs at The North Carolina Partnership for Children, Inc., deputy executive director at the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (now Child Care Aware of America), deputy director at Child Care Services Association, and executive director at the Durham Child Care Council. She holds a master’s degree in early childhood education from Concordia University–St. Paul and a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Hamilton College.

Stockbridge is the president of the Delmarva Power Region of Pepco Holdings Inc. He most recently served as vice president of customer relations. He was responsible for the startup of retail energy affiliates for both Conectiv and Peco Energy in Philadelphia.

Sharp elected Goldey-Beacom trustee

Ursula A. Sharp was elected a Trustee of Goldey-Beacom College on May 1, 2015, and will begin serving a two-year term beginning on July 1.

Sharp is Senior Director of Business Development & Executive Producer of Soundview Media Group, a division of Concentrated Knowledge Corporation, of Kennett Square, PA.  She brings over 20 years of diverse experience in on-line publishing, training and education, telecommunications, and financial markets.   Her career has also included employment at Lamont Digital Systems, Inc., and J.P. Morgan Chase & Company.  She is a resident of West Grove, Pennsylvania.

In announcing her election, President-Elect Gary L. Wirt stated, “Ursula brings a strong and varied background in media, marketing, publishing and customer care.  She will prove a powerful asset to the Board.”

Zander named UD admissions chief

Douglas Zander has been named director of admissions at the University of Delaware, effective June 1., said Chris Lucier, vice president for enrollment management.

Zander, a member of UD’s admissions team since 2013, has been serving as interim director of admissions since the departure of José Aviles, who became associate vice provost and director of admissions at the University of Buffalo on May 1. Zander joined UD as deputy director of admission in 2013, working closely with the director to manage admissions operations and to lead strategic recruitment and marketing planning and implementation.

Before coming to Delaware, he served as associate provost for enrollment management at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for four years. Earlier, he was director of admissions there from 2002 to 2009, and from 1998 to 2002, he was vice president of enrollment and campus life and dean of students at Paul Smith’s College in New York.

Morris named to Delaware Tech post

David R. Morris has been appointed to the position of assistant vice president for development at Delaware Technical Community College in the Office of the President. In his new role, he will have college-wide oversight and provide leadership for development, alumni relations, donor relations, annual giving, employee giving, major and planned gifts and grants. Morris will develop engagement initiatives and cultivate relationships with alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, businesses and foundations.

Morris joins Delaware Tech from the University of Delaware where he served for nine years as senior associate director for annual giving. In this role, he provided leadership for the university’s strategic development, fund-raising and alumni relations and served as liaison to senior leadership.

Morris led development strategies and targeted marketing of fundraising as well as the rebranding of the leadership annual giving society.

He also had oversight of employee giving and played an integral role in campus events.

Morris holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration/marketing from Millersville University and is pursuing his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Delaware.

Riemann promoted at Becker Morgan

Becker Morgan Group announced that  J. Michael Riemann, P.E., has been promoted to Associate Principal. Riemann started as an intern in 1997, joining full time as a Civil Designer in 2001, advancing to Associate in 2006, named Senior Associate in 2009, and promoted to Associate Principal in January 2015.

Riemann has been a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Delaware since 2006. In addition to his promotion, Riemann was honored as the 2015 Young Engineer of the Year by the Delaware Council of Engineering Societies in 2015.

Involved in various professional and civic organizations, Riemann is currently President Elect in Downtown Dover Rotary, and Vice President of ACEC Delaware.

Badiey named acting dean

Mohsen Badiey, deputy dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE), will serve as acting dean of CEOE effective July 1. Badiey steps into this position as current CEOE Dean Nancy Targett assumes the role of interim president of the University of Delaware.

In his current role as deputy dean, Badiey oversees the college’s research development enterprise in collaboration with UD’s Research Office and develops strategic initiatives to further CEOE’s mission.

Badiey, who joined the UD faculty in 1990, is an expert in ocean acoustics, or the study of sound transmission in the ocean, as well as acoustical oceanography, which is the use of sound waves to study the properties of the ocean. In particular, his research efforts focus on the shallow-water or nearshore coastal environment.

Badiey received a bachelor’s degree in engineering mechanics and a master’s degree in structural engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1981 and 1983, respectively. In 1988, he earned a doctorate in applied marine physics and ocean engineering from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, where he was a research associate during the last two years of his graduate studies.

Bankers Association elects officers

Rodger Levenson, executive  vice  president and Chief Financial Officer, WSFS Bank, was elected to a second consecutive term as the Chairman of the Delaware Bankers Association (DBA) at the DBA’s 120th Annual Meeting in Wilmington.

The DBA also elected and installed Mark A. Graham, EVP, Wealth Advisory Services, Wilmington Trust, to the position of Chairman-Elect.

Collick  promoted at Christiana Care

Lateshsha Collick  has been appointed nurse manager of the endoscopy suites at Wilmington and Christiana hospitals.

Collick provided primary leadership to the staff and physicians of the ENT, oralmaxillofacial, and ophthalmic service lines at Wilmington Hospital operating room, while also supporting the entire staff and services offered on the Wilmington campus, including thoracic, bariatric, plastics, general and orthopedic surgery.

Her previous role as patient care coordinator encompassed developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians, staff, sales representatives and team members. She has been actively involved in the On-Time Start and Flow initiatives within the perioperative service line.

Collick received a BSN from Clarkson College, Nebraska, and MHA from Bellevue University, Nebraska.

Vinall named AVP

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America hired Paige Vinall as assistant vice president of Application Development in the IT division.

In her new role, Vinall leads the company’s technology strategy and business systems for variable annuities, fixed index annuities and sales. She is also responsible for developing the Allianz Life e-commerce strategy as well as the delivery of projects, solutions and IT services that support the company’s technology solutions. Vinall reports to Chief Information Officer, Jeff Palm.

Vinall holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in computer and information science from the University of Delaware.
