Delaware is getting its own network TV station.
WRDE-TV a low powered station in coastal Sussex County is slated to sign on as an affiliate of the NBC Network in June, according to multiple reports.
The station is branding itself as “Coast TV.” The station has been affiliated with the MyNetworkTV and COZI TV.
Holding majority ownership of NBC Universal is Comcast, the leading cable provider in Delaware. A story in the Multichannel website said the new station has reached retransmission agreements with Comcast and Dish Network.
The station plans local newscasts as part of a plan to set it apart from Philadelphia and Baltimore NBC affiliates that already come into the area via cable. The low-power signal is said to reach as far north as the Smyrna/Dover area and as far south as Ocean City, Md. The eastern boundary is Wildwood, N.J. and the western fringe is Seaford.
The Comcast-owned NBC affiliate in Philadelphia has been providing some news coverage in coastal Sussex after opening a bureau in northern Delaware.
The news market in Sussex is currently dominated by WBOC-TV in Salisbury, which operates a Delaware bureau and has a news helicopter.
