Maryland’s high court rules Gore must pay $29 million tax bill

gore (2)Maryland’s highest court has upheld a Tax Court decision that ruled entities of  W.L. Gore and Associates is liable for $29 million in state taxes.

The decision from the Court of Appeals rejected Gore’s argument that the Gore Enterprise Holdings was not subject to Maryland taxes.

Gore Enterprise Holdings was formed as an entity for the company’s large patent portfolio. The case also included another Gore entity that handled excess capital generated by the company, according to the decision.

Gore Enterprise  holdings is based in Delaware. Gore has its worldwide headquarters in Newark, but has a large cluster of  operations and business units   in neighboring Cecil County,  Md.

The company also has a large medical business  that is based in Arizona. The company is best known for its Gore-Tex fiber used in apparel. The company had its roots in coverings for cabling and operates in a variety of industrial and apparel markets.
