EZ passStarting, Nov. 1,  the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is giving all customers opening a new individual E-ZPass account  a free transponder. The transponder normally costs $15.

The free E-ZPass transponder promotion is open to residents of any state, and will end December 31, 2013. The goal  is to increase the E- ZPass utilization rates at Delaware toll sites on Route 1 and Interstate 95. Commercial accounts and “On-the-Go” sales are not eligible for  the transponder. Delaware has issued over 350,000 E-ZPass transponders since the introduction of the electronic toll  system in 1999.

Delaware’s three main toll plazas currently operate at a 67% usage rate for E-ZPass customers. Nearly 21,000 new transponder units have been purchased in 2013 by Delaware customers, averaging over 2,300 sales per month. E-ZPass is a modern toll collection technology that makes traveling more convenient, helps drivers save money through multi-use discounts, and helps reduce traffic congestion. There are currently 25 toll agencies in 15 states that offer E-ZPass services.
