The Delaware City Refinery reported flaring early Friday afternoon. More than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide was released into the air.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resoruces and Environmental Control did not release a cause for the incident. The incident is under investigation.

Flaring often results as a way to relieve pressure when a piece of refinery equipment has a problem.

DNREC did report that efforts were under way to remedy the problem.

The refinery, a part of PBF Energy,  is required to report the releases under state rules and regulations. It does not add additional information for  proprietary reasons.
