Summer slowdown emerges as Delaware jobless rate rises slightly to 7.3%

Screen Shot 2013-07-19 at 11.03.46 AMThe Delaware economy is again seeing a summer slowdown as the jobless rate rose slightly to 7.3 percent in June, compared to 7.2 percent during the same period a year earlier and a month earlier.

Delaware and the nation have been unable to crack the 7% barrier in the past year or so.

Delaware Department of Labor officials did point to a “disconnect in data.” with different measurements painting a somewhat different picture.

According to household data, the state saw 500 fewer employed Delaware residents and 300 more unemployed residents in June when compared to the same period a year ago.

The actual payroll records of Delaware employers, shows a gain of 5,300 jobs from March 2012 to March 2013 (the most recent month) while the business survey for that period was up by 7,100 jobs.

Delaware’s total non farm jobs have increased by 1.8%.in the past year. Nationally, jobs during that period increased 1.7%, according to state figures.

It is clear, according to the state labor department that the sate, national and regional economies are seeing a continuing pattern of a brisk start to a year, followed by a slowdown in the summer.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.6% in June unchanged from 7.6% in May 2013. In June 2012, the U.S. unemployment rate was 8.2%.
