Timothy Gardner, M.D., received the American Heart Association’s 2013 Gold Heart Award from Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association.

In recognition of his more than 25 years of service, Timothy Gardner, M.D., medical director of the Center for Heart & Vascular Health at Christiana Care Health System, is a recipient of the American Heart Association 2013 Gold Heart Award.

The award is the highest honor the American Heart Association gives in recognition of continued, distinguished service. Dr. Gardner received the award at the 2013 Gold Heart Banquet in Dallas last month.

“It is a great honor to receive the Gold Heart Award,” said Dr. Gardner. “I join an exceptional group of colleagues who are recipients of this award, who have contributed in many ways to save people from heart disease and stroke.”

Gardner is an internationally known heart surgeon and leader in cardiovascular medicine. He served as American Heart Association national president in 2008-09. In that role, he was the association’s chief volunteer science and medical officer, responsible for medical, scientific and public health matters.

Gardner has served on the American Heart Association’s national board of directors, chaired the Committee on Scientific Sessions Program and the Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee. He has also served as a guest editor of Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.

In addition, he is currently chair of the Steering Committee for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Research Network of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Gardner joined Christiana Care’s Center for Heart & Vascular Health in 2005, where he oversees a team of expert cardiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons and subspecialists. In 2011, he was named executive director of the Christiana Care Value Institute.

The American Heart Association is devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke — America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.
